Beneath Magdalen Bridge
nelsonb45_Magdalen_Bridge.jpg
Beneath Magdalen Bridge by Bill Nelson, Restoration Artist

Photographer’s Notes:

Punting on Oxford’s rivers has been a popular recreational activity for over a century. Here the photographer captured the quintessential Oxford experience — punting on the Isis River. The Magdalen Bridge Boathouse is beside the bridge and close to the Botanic Gardens and Christ Church Meadow. I’m told that Magdalen is properly pronounced “Maudlin”.

This image is from a set of more than 200 nitrocellulose negatives discovered in Minneapolis. The images were shot in Europe during 1904, photographer unknown.
